News, Nudity & Merry Christmas!

Flare Clothing Company have been busy this autumn getting some new products ready, the Lunar jersey is made from a breathable, wicking fabric and comes in a tank top style or with long sleeves. All Hannah's products are tailored for girls who like to shred, they come in eye catching colours with pretty designs and will definitely get you noticed on the trail ;). Have a look at Flare's shop here: www.flareclothingco.com

As well as developing new jerseys, Hannah has also been working on designs for my 2014 race kit. It's looking super hot and super pink! Flare is also busy preparing for the London Bike Show in February. I'm so lucky to be attending the show with Hannah to represent Flare Clothing Company, it's great to be a part of an upcoming female specific brand and it will be a fun weekend of creeping on new MTB products for 2014.

Race kit! PINK.

I'm really grateful to 100% who have teamed up with me for 2014 and will be providing me with their top of the range Accuri and Strata goggles.

100% Accuri and Strata (left) Strata in Bubble Gum (right).

The Strata has redefined the standards of an entry level goggle. With a perfect range of vision and a sharp focus lens these are definitely the best goggles around for $30. These goggles perform in all conditions, I recently spent a day testing them at my local tracks. These woods are always dark, usually muddy and mostly wet but last weekend they were darker, muddier and wetter than ever! The Strata goggles remained clear, hardly misted and were super comfortable, so whether your looking to race or ride, I would highly recommend them!

The Accuri goggle is designed for motocross and comes with an optional anti fog mirror lens that is scratch resistant as well. The strap, like the Strata goggle, is coated with silicon to grip your helmet and hold the goggles in place. The frame of these goggles is flexible and durable, providing a perfect fit that will last a long time. They also come in a wide range of awesome colours! I couldn't be happier with these goggles, I'll be using these for racing as well as skiing!!!

220Triathlon is the UK's longest running and most popular triathlon magazine. Each month they provide readers with the latest triathlon and triathlon related news, race coverage, training/nutrition advice and gear reviews. I was lucky enough to land an interview with them where they asked me for some training and nutrition advice. It was great chatting to them and my advice can be found on their website here: www.220triathlon.com/training/bike/mtb-tips

Now for the bit you have all been waiting for......

The University of Dundee produce a naked calendar of all the sports teams every year to raise funds for the Sports Union. The Sports Union is central to the University and looks after the many sports clubs run by students. They provide buses for transport, funding to compete in the BUCS competitions as well as coaching and support for elite athletes juggling their sport with student life. Massive shout out to the cycling club for their excellent banter and laughs as always. Enjoy!

Some banter and road safety...

Some more great news for the 2014 season...I'll be working with another two well known brands of the cycling world - POC and Lizard Skins.

POC is a Swedish company that produces top of the range protective equipment for mountain biking and snow sports.  Their light weight, high performance gear provides ultimate protection from injuries. Come at me steep, rocky trails!

Lizard Skins have been around since 1993 and sell products worldwide across all cycling disciplines.  They produce a huge variety of cycling components for road, BMX and mountain biking. I particularly love their colourful range of grips, which you can even customize! Check out their products here: www.lizardskins.com

Off-season training is going well with lots of gruelling spin sessions from Coach James. The University Sport Performance Programme are providing weekly strength and conditioning sessions with professional coaches. They have tailored my gym sessions to include lots of really specific strength exercises to help with position and control on the downhill bike. We also got Uni team kit, which adds to the fun!

modelling the UoD Sport Programme team kit...lovely.

University is tough just now. I'm in my final year, so it won't be long and I can completely focus on doing my best in the cycling world. I graduate in June 2014, just in time to head out to Europe for some European and World cup races, still can't get over how excited I am about racing in the elite category!

I'd like to thank the companies who have teamed up with me for 2014 so far. I really can't wait to do you all proud! POC, Lizard Skins, 100%, Flare clothing Company, High Rise Bike Skills and Muc-off.

On a more depressing note...there have been a horrific number of fatal cycling accidents on the roads recently. The rise in the number of cyclists commuting and riding for leisure is fantastic, however statistically it does put a lot more people in danger. I really can't stress how important it is to maximise your chances of being seen. Use reflective clothing and high powered lights on the front and back/ sides of your bike...blah blah blah...It's so easy to state the obvious and repeat what all cycle safety articles advise...but even wearing the right gear does not even come close to guaranteeing your safety on the roads. You must be 100% aware of your situation and the surrounding traffic at all times. Listening to music on the road is a definite NO and always assume that the vehicle hasn't seen you or that they are driving too fast. Riding in a large group is one of the safest ways to hit the roads and a lot more fun too.

Go out on your bike, enjoy the fresh air, good health and freedom it gives you, but never stop reminding yourself of how dangerous your situation is and please take care.

Elite DH racer!

Things are great in Scotland at this time of year, I love the freeze of autumn before the snow.

First...some exciting news.

British Cycling has moved me up into the elite race category for 2014. This is such a great opportunity, I'll be racing against the best female downhillers in the world. Bring it on!

In addition to this...

Muc-off has teamed up with me for 2014! Muc-off is one of the most prestigious producers of bike care products worldwide. I'm really grateful for their support, a clean bike is a happy bike! My flatmates are also very pleased - only clean bikes in the kitchen from now on! Have a look at their product range for the perfect bike maintenance kit.  muc-off.com

Winter training has kicked off with James Scott from High Rise Bike Coaching planning my programme. He did a great job working with me over the season and we came out with some fantastic results. If anyone is looking for a coach to get them podium fit for 2014 contact James now! On twitter: @jamescycle or by e-mail at: highrisebikeskills@gmail.com

Lauren Jenkins, a journalism student, is currently writing for some of the UK's most popular cycling magazines. She is doing an amazing job at getting more female mountain biking coverage with Wideopen bike magazine. Lauren did an interview with me a few weeks ago for a "Women's Wednesday" article, follow this link to gave a look and check out the others: Wideopen Bike magazine - Emma Atkinson Interview.

Halloween has been and gone, one of my favourite occasions of the year. I didn't manage to party at all this time, but I did insist on wearing bat ears all day. Instead of attending the student union's famous Halloween party I took the train back home to the mountains of Northern Scotland.

I spent the weekend riding bikes and chilling with my family. While riding, Jamie and I put together a short edit, dedicated to the mountains and trails I grew up around and love with all my heart. Check it out below!

Flare Clothing Company is getting ready to launch it's autumn range soon, keep an eye on Hannah's website for news and sweet products! Girls have a look at the T-shirt section and get one on your Xmas list!

Posing in my Flare jersey

Jamie and I recently spent a couple of days in Bergen, Norway. We did a load of adventuring around the city and spent some time in the mountains (fjords) that come straight out of the sea. It's such a beautiful place! Looking forward to going back.

100% 2014!

100% specialise in producing goggles and eye-ware for motocross and downhill.

The roots of 100% date way back to the 1980's so these guys really do know what they are doing!

I've always struggled to find goggles with perfect vision that fit me correctly. If they sit well in my helmet then they usually pinch my nose...a sacrifice I've made while riding up until now...

I'm teaming up with 100% for the 2014 season and will be sporting their Accuri and Strata goggles while shredding the trails. These babies are not only a perfect fit with crystal clear vision but have some sweet lens technology allowing 100% focus on the track.

Off Season...SKI TIME!

The 2013 downhill season has officially finished now, well done to everyone who raced and a massive thank you to all the race organisers as well as all the companies and teams who contributed.

It's now time for a bit of post season rest and recovery! Which gives me a good chance to get my racing resume mailed out to lots of teams and companies as my hunt for support in 2014 continues.

University has kicked off again, I'm now in my final year of anatomy and physiology, so the work is getting pretty tough but it's definitely do-able with a bit of planning and organisation.

Anatomy - every day is Halloween

I'm really please to announce that the University of Dundee has selected me for their Sports performance Programme.  The aims of this programme is to improve the competitive success of Dundee Universities sport teams and athletes and to raise aspirations and expectations of these teams and athletes.

In return for our commitment to the university and our sports, the selected athletes receive high quality coaching and a range of services to enhance our sporting performance.

So if your a competitive athlete and planning on applying to University, check out what courses the University of Dundee has to offer as well as the ISE at Dundee which is their fantastic gym on campus and has just been refurbished with loads new exercise machines and facilities. Team Up 2014

After a brilliant 2013 season I am searching for companies and teams to work with me for mutual success in 2014.

My story......

As a junior I was selected for the Scottish Downhill Talent Team after one year of racing in the Scottish Series.

The talent team taught me loads and took my racing to a level where I could tackle nationals and even the world cup series.

In 2009 I sustained a bad injury to my left arm resulting in surgery. The surgeons did an excellent job putting some metal work in and sticking my arm back together.

Unfortunately the injury has left me with very limited movement in my left arm (however it is now stuck permanently in handle bar position...which can't be a bad thing!)

In 2010 I attempted to race in the UCI World Cup series, having been off the bike for almost a year. Although I managed to qualify for the women's final in Maribor (still as a junior rider) I didn't feel confident in my riding and decided to take some time out.

After two years of training, 2013 was my year of return.

I'm really happy with my progress and results. It wouldn't have been possible without the help of James Scott from High Rise Coaching who has supported me throughout the season. (Twitter @jamescycle)

My highlights of this year include winning at the British Universities Championship, the British Championships and taking the over-All Scottish Series Championship.

In 2014 I plan to race in the British Series, IXS European Cup and in the World Series.

If you would be interested in working with me please contact me at emma.atkinson6@hotmail.co.uk or on 07840345704.

Emma's got FLARE!

                                                                       "Shred like a girl"
Emma in Flare jersey
Hannah Myers stumbled upon the same issue that most girl mountain bikers encounter when they begin riding bikes...there are not many companies out there designing attractive, feminine riding clothing.

Instead of turning to the children's motocross section like me, she took things into her own hands and has developed Flare Clothing Company.

Flare is producing high-end technical clothing, designed with extreme sport performance in mind, as well as having bold, bright designs and a flattering fit.

Emma in Flare Tee

Having studied product design at university, Flare was developed as part of Hannah's Master's degree. She has the knowledge AND the passion!

I'm really proud to announce that Hannah and I have teamed up for 2014. I can't wait to show this sweet kit off at races next year!

Scottish Series Champion 2013!

allllll the booty!

Can't believe it was a year ago I decided to race again after two years off the bike...feels like it was yesterday. Deciding to return to the world of Downhill Racing has been the best decision I've made. I have had the best time ever and completely fallen in love with the sport again. It has become my ambition, my focus and my life!

I can't express how grateful I am to everyone that has supported me. In particular to James Scott who contacted me earlier in the season and offered to coach me. We have made a great team and thanks to his time and effort I have smashed the races and got us both some good results. My friends at university have been really encouraging too, coming to races with me (their role consisted mainly of heckling and shouting abuse to make me go faster) and helping me with bike maintenance (you know who you are!), so thank-you so much to them! Although my family would rather I played table tennis or snakes and ladders they have still been supportive and encouraging. I intend to put everything into my training this off-season and do you all proud in 2014 as I hit some bigger races.

Ft William SDA

Fort William SDA was my final race of this year. The conditions were tough - pretty greasy on the top section and a complete mud bog in the wood section which unfortunately had me come off in both race runs. I still managed to place 1st by over a minute with a 6.32. Really disappointed that I didn't get a clean run down but I can't complain about my result!

My full results list can be found on my "Results and Upcoming Events" page but the highlights of the 2013 season have been winning at the British Championships, winning the British Universities Championships and taking the over-all Scottish Series Championship. I am really pleased with 2nd in the over-all British rankings.

My plans for 2014 are to race the full British Downhill Series, the British Championships and the Scottish Championships...with the potential for a World Cup or two as well, depending on my financial situation.

I aim to be racing the UCI World Series in 2015.

And so begins my hunt for sponsorship! I am searching for teams/ companies/ people to work with for mutual success in 2014. I have a resume I can forward to anyone who is interested. My e-mail address is emma.atkinson6@hotmail.co.uk.

Back to university now for my final year as an Anatomy & Physiology student, it's going to be a tough few months fitting in training with study but all the hard work will pay off. I'm looking forward to finishing my degree and focusing on my cycling career.

I'm definitely crossing my eyes!
